This guide reflects our firsthand experience as owners of a three-tent glamping retreat five minutes from Blue Hole. We’ve hosted thousands of couples and fielded the same October questions hundreds of times. Every date, opening time, and price below was checked against official sources in September 2026.

If you’re looking for the best things to do in October in Wimberley Texas, leave the swimsuit at home.
One of the most common mistakes we see all month is couples arriving ready to swim at Blue Hole, only to find that the swimming season at Blue Hole Regional Park runs from May 1 through Labor Day, with additional weekends in September.
By October 1, the swimming area is closed.
Jacob’s Well hasn’t permitted swimming since June 2022, and Hays County’s August 18, 2026 notice confirms that the natural area is currently open for hiking only.
That might sound disappointing, but October is actually one of our favorite times in Wimberley.
The month brings dark-sky evenings, a packed events calendar, average highs around 78°F, and comfortable daytime temperatures for exploring trails.

Why Wimberley TX in October Beats Every Other Month
October is the shoulder-season sweet spot, and the numbers back it up rather than the marketing copy.
- Average high of 78.4°F and average low of 60.1°F, per Weather Atlas, down sharply from September’s 87.3°F average high.
- Highs slide from about 85°F on October 1 to about 75°F by October 31, according to Weather Spark, so the first and last weekends feel like different seasons.
- Roughly 1.65 inches of rain across about 9.5 rain days, with average relative humidity near 69 percent.
- Average day length is 11 hours 26 minutes. On October 1, sunrise is 7:26 a.m., and sunset is 7:17 p.m., so full dark arrives before 8 p.m. by mid-month.
- Daylight Saving Time ends November 1, 2026, which means October keeps its long evenings right through Halloween.
What that adds up to: you can hike Old Baldy at 10 a.m. instead of 7 a.m., sit outside for dinner without swatting, and still get four hours of proper darkness after sunset.
What Visitors Often Don’t Realize About Wimberley, TX in October
Nearly everyone plans an October trip around water and then discovers both famous swimming holes are shut for the season.
Blue Hole’s swim area closes after the September weekends. Jacob’s Well has been closed to swimming since June 2022 due to low aquifer flow, and Hays County’s own guidance says a 2026 reopening is unlikely.
Here’s what almost nobody knows: both parks stay fully open, and both are free. Blue Hole’s 4.5 miles of trails, playground, picnic areas, and amphitheater require no reservation and no fee once swim season ends.
Jacob’s Well Natural Area is free year-round for its three miles of trails. So October is the one time you get these places without a booking window, a wristband, or a crowd.

Wimberley Market Days in October: The One Saturday That Sells Out Town
Wimberley Market Days lands on Saturday, October 3, 2026, and it’s the Hill Country’s oldest and largest outdoor market.
- 490 booths across 20 oak-shaded acres, run by the Wimberley Lions Club since 1964.
- Runs first Saturdays only, March through December, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine.
- Admission is free. Parking is paid, and all net proceeds fund Lions Club community grants.
- Leashed pets are welcome, hauling assistance is available for big purchases, and there are ATMs on site.
- It carries a strong TripAdvisor attraction rating built on hundreds of traveler reviews, with the most repeated advice being to arrive early and bring a wagon.
October is one of the busiest Market Days of the year because the weather finally cooperates. Every lodging property in the valley, ours included, fills for that Friday and Saturday.
Wimberley Arts Fest 2026 and the Blue Agave Art Fair Merger
This is the biggest change to the Wimberley TX October calendar in years, and most guides still have it wrong.
- The Wimberley Valley Art League merged its two annual festivals, Wimberley Arts Fest and the Blue Agave Art Fair, into a single event starting in 2026.
- New dates: Saturday, October 17 and Sunday, October 18, 2026, in its 19th year.
- New location: near Wimberley Square rather than the old Waters Point venue, specifically to catch downtown weekend foot traffic.
- Entry is free. Expect continuous live music, food trucks, and juried work from artists across the country, with roughly a quarter being local.
- Wimberley is one of only 30 Texas Cultural Districts, which is why a town of this size supports a festival of this quality.
If you only have one weekend in October and you care about art, this is the one. If you care about shopping and antiques, take the first weekend instead.
The Chili Cookoff Wimberley TX Just Added to the Calendar
Brand new for 2026: the first annual Wimberley Chili Cook-Off and Music Fest at Willow Lake Watering Hole and Mercantile, 110 Old Kyle Road, on Saturday, October 10.
- 8 a.m. gates open, 9 a.m. bar opens, 12 p.m. chili tasting begins.
- 2:30 p.m. Red River Shootout (Texas versus Oklahoma) on the big screen.
- 5:30 p.m. winners announced, then Ruben V at 6 p.m. and headliner West Texas Exiles at 9 p.m.
- Admission is free. Chili tasting costs $20 per person, with a portion going to Camp CommUnity.
Willow Lake also runs free live music every Friday and Saturday through October, plus music bingo on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. and a vinyl night on Thursdays at 6 p.m.
For a town this size, that’s a remarkable amount of free entertainment.
Stargazing in Wimberley TX: The 2026 Dark Sky Calendar
The Wimberley Valley, meaning the cities of Wimberley and Woodcreek together, was designated a DarkSky International Community in 2018, the third in Texas.
In November 2023, DarkSky International named it Dark Sky Place of the Year. Skies here rate roughly Bortle Class 4, which is genuinely dark for somewhere 37 miles from Austin.
October is also Hill Country Dark Skies Month, which is why the valley schedules its astronomy events now.

Local Tip: Book the Second Week, Not the Third
Every stargazing guide points to the Orionids on October 21 to 22 because it’s the bigger shower. In 2026, that’s the wrong advice for Wimberley.
The moon will be a waxing gibbous at roughly 80 percent illumination on Orionid peak night, washing out everything but the brightest meteors until it sets in the small hours.
The genuinely good window is October 8 through 15, anchored by the new moon on October 10.
October 8 to 12 is the true moon-free core, with October 13 to 15 still very good once the crescent sets. This window also happens to include the Draconids on October 8 to 9, one of the only showers best watched in the early evening rather than at 4 a.m.
If you want the Milky Way over the Hill Country without setting an alarm, that’s your week. It’s also, not coincidentally, when the town schedules its star party.
The Blue Hole Star Party: Free, and the Best Wimberley Dark Sky Event of the Year
Saturday, October 10, 2026, at Blue Hole Regional Park’s soccer fields, 333 Blue Hole Lane. Free, though registration is recommended.
- 7:00 p.m. live music
- 7:45 p.m. telescope viewing with the Astronomy Club at Texas State
- 8:30 p.m. guided laser sky tour by the Wimberley Valley Dark Sky Committee
- Bring lawn chairs or a blanket, a picnic, and a flashlight. The park supplies red cellophane to cover your light and protect everyone’s night vision.
- Restrooms and water fountains stay open. No alcohol or smoking anywhere in the park.
One correction worth making, because the old version of this page had it wrong: the Howl at the Moon Dance Party moved to September 26 in 2026.
It is not an October event this year. Check the Wimberley Parks and Recreation events page before you plan around it.

Jacob’s Well guided tours are the sleeper pick here. They run free every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. during fall through spring, with no summer tours, so October is the first month of the season.
The Nature Center exhibits are open Saturdays and Sundays 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Hiking in Wimberley in October: Blue Hole, Old Baldy, and Jacob’s Well Compared
Three trail systems, three completely different experiences. Guests routinely try to do all three in a day, and it works, but only in this order.

Old Baldy, also called Prayer Mountain, was saved from development in 2015 when the Save Old Baldy Foundation helped the City purchase the 4.3-acre tract. It sits about 2.5 miles from Wimberley Square.
The trailhead is genuinely easy to miss: look for small gravel turnouts on both sides of the road and a green “It’s UNLAWFUL to litter” sign directly opposite the steps.
Blue Hole Regional Park holds a TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice ranking in the top 10 percent of attractions worldwide, based on millions of traveler reviews.
In October, it’s the quietest it gets all year. Take the Creekside Trail from Blue Hole out to the Cypress Creek Nature Preserve.
Jacob’s Well is an 81-acre park at the headwaters of Cypress Creek, which flows through Blue Hole and into the Blanco River. The well reaches a vertical depth of 140 feet, leading into an underwater cave system extending over 4,300 feet long, making it the second-longest submerged cave in Texas.
The main trail down to the spring is about a quarter mile of compacted granite, limestone bedrock, and two or three staircases, so it isn’t wheelchair accessible, though staff can transport visitors by UTV when available.
Unique Things to Do in October in Wimberley Texas
Beyond the obvious. These are the ones our guests thank us for later.
- Watch molten glass being blown. Wimberley Glassworks has been producing hand-blown lighting and art glass since 1992. Free demonstrations run Thursday through Sunday, 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The gallery is open Wednesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed Monday and Tuesday.
- Play shuffleboard on Texas’s oldest table at the historic Devil’s Backbone Tavern out on RR 32, paired with the scenic drive.
- Drive the Devil’s Backbone at sunset. RR 32 gets its name from the vertebrae-like limestone outcroppings along the ridge. It’s free, it takes about an hour round trip, and October’s low sun angle is the best light of the year on it.
- Walk the Patsy Glenn Refuge. A 1.8-acre bird sanctuary tucked behind the Wimberley Community Center, created in October 2001 by 60 volunteers. It has a chimney swift tower, a bird blind, a viewing platform, a butterfly garden, and enhanced wetlands added in 2021.
- Visit Pioneer Town and Jack Glover’s Cowboy Museum, a reconstructed 1880s western town that most visitors drive past without noticing.
- Zipline over the Hill Country. Wimberley Zipline Adventures runs ten lines from 150 to 900 feet at 376 Winn Valley Drive. The full guided experience runs roughly 1.5 to 2 hours at around $106 plus tax per person, and reservations are required well in advance. Closed-toe shoes are mandatory, not optional.
Wimberley Valley Winery Fall Tastings and Texas Hill Country Wine Tours in October
Both major wineries sit in Driftwood, a short drive northwest, and October’s cooler patio weather is the reason locals go now rather than in August.

Two things worth knowing before you go. Driftwood closes to the public four times a year for wine club parties, so check first.
It also can’t take groups over 12 on Saturdays or holiday-weekend Sundays, and buses are turned away on those days. Weekday reservations for larger groups need two days’ notice at 512-692-6229.
For something lower-key, Middleton Brewing in San Marcos and The Shady Llama beer and wine garden at 18325 RR 12 both give you outdoor seating without a tasting fee.

Wimberley Square Shopping Guide and Where to Eat in Wimberley TX in Fall
Wimberley Square sits at the intersection of RR 12 and FM 2325 and is genuinely walkable, which is unusual for a Hill Country town this size.
Galleries worth your time:
- Art on 12, 13811 Ranch Road 12, representing over 50 local and regional artists across a wide range of media and price points. Open daily 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday until 6 p.m.
- Wildflower Art Gallery, home to Linda Calvert Jacobson’s work.
- Silo Gallery and Glass Studio and Hill Country Collectibles for fused glass and indigenous artist work.
Where to eat:
- The Leaning Pear, walking distance from the Square, with a creek-adjacent patio. It carries over 450 aggregated reviews as of August 2026, and the pear salad, pizzas, and Brussels sprouts come up over and over.
- Community Pizza & Beer Garden, casual and outdoor, repeatedly named by both Tripadvisor and Yelp reviewers as the best pizza in town.
- Creekhouse Kitchen and Bar and Chill’s on the Creek, both directly on the bank of Cypress Creek.
- The Salt Lick BBQ in Driftwood, which pairs naturally with a winery day.
- Sweet stops: Candy Cottage, Monster Treats, and Papa Hoo’s Popcorn.
Family-Friendly Halloween Events Wimberley TX 2026
Wimberley does Halloween unusually well for a town of its size, and almost all of it is free.
- Wimberley UMC Pumpkin Patch, on the south side of town at Ranch Road 12 and County Road 1492. Open throughout October.
Hundreds of gourds; proceeds go to WUMC Family Ministries. This is the Wimberley pumpkin patch on RR 12 everyone searches for.
- Boo Hole Halloween, Saturday, October 24, 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Blue Hole Regional Park. The Parks Department’s largest event of the year.
Trick-or-treat trail, carnival games, live music, costume contest, s’mores, hayride, photo booths, and a haunted trail built along the park’s hiking paths. Free.
- Hunter’s Night Out, also Saturday, October 24, the 23rd annual Knights of Columbus fundraiser at St. Mary Church.
- Downtown Trick or Treating, Friday, October 30. Local shops on and around the Square hand out treats. Note: The organizers moved it to the 30th specifically because the 31st falls on a Saturday in 2026.
- Halloween night, Saturday, October 31, the StratoCrackers play a free costume show at Willow Lake from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.
A scheduling note most families miss: October 24 has two major events running simultaneously, and October 30 and 31 are separate nights.
You can realistically do Boo Hole one weekend and downtown trick-or-treating the next.
Romantic Things to Do in Wimberley TX in October
October is our single busiest month for anniversaries and proposals, and there’s a reason. The heat is gone, the sky is dark, and everything closes early enough that evenings belong to you.
- Old Baldy at golden hour. The 360-degree view over the Wimberley Valley with low October sun is the best free photograph in town.
- A winery patio in late afternoon, when the temperature finally sits in the low 70s.
- The Draconids on October 8 or 9, watchable from a blanket at 9 p.m. rather than requiring a 4 a.m. alarm.
- Devil’s Backbone at sunset, then dinner back on the Square.
- A private massage or facial, which we’ll come back to below.
- An outdoor soaking tub after dark. October nights average 60°F, which is precisely the temperature at which hot water outdoors stops being pleasant and becomes the whole point.

The three tents: Shaka is the bright, airy one that fills with morning light. Chisum is the dark, cozy leather-and-wood retreat. Kingfisher is the wheelchair-accessible tent. All three have identical pools, tubs, and amenities.
Policies to know: adults only with a minimum renter age of 21, no children, no pets (service animals welcome with documentation). Two-night minimum, three nights on holiday weekends.
Check-in after 3 p.m., check-out by 11 a.m. Quiet hours 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Full refund less a 3 percent fee if you cancel more than 60 days out; no refunds within 60 days, so trip insurance is worth considering.

The temperature swing is the thing people underestimate. Highs near 85°F on October 1 and lows near 46°F by month’s end, according to AccuWeather’s 2026 outlook.
- Layers, not a coat. A t-shirt for midday and a proper jacket for after sunset.

1. Can you swim in Blue Hole Wimberley in October?
No. The Blue Hole swim season runs May 1 through Labor Day plus weekends in September, so the swimming area is closed for all of October. The rest of the park stays open 8 a.m. to sunset, and all trails, the playground, courts, and picnic areas are free with no reservation. Season passes and reservations reopen in the spring, typically March 1 for Wimberley residents and April 1 for non-residents.
2. Is Jacob’s Well open in October 2026?
The natural area is open daily 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., with no entry after 5:30 p.m., and hiking is free with no reservation needed. Swimming is not permitted. It has been closed to swimming since June 2022 due to low water levels and reduced spring flow, and Hays County’s August 18, 2026 update confirms the area remains hiking-only. October is a good month to visit because the free Saturday guided tours resume for the fall-through-spring season, running 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Rainfall averages around 1.65 inches across about 9.5 days, and average relative humidity sits near 69 percent. Pack layers rather than one heavy jacket.
4. Are accommodation rates cheaper in Wimberley in October than in summer?
Not reliably, and this is where a lot of guides mislead people. October is one of the busiest months of the year here because of Market Days, Arts Fest and the Halloween events. Weekday nights early in the month are often the better value. If you want lower rates, look at late January or February instead, when Market Days doesn’t run at all.
5. How far in advance should I book for a Wimberley October weekend?
For the Market Days weekend (October 3) and the Arts Fest weekend (October 17 to 18), book six to eight weeks out. Those two weekends fill first every year. For the last weekend of October, four to five weeks is usually enough. Our own two-night minimum applies, and holiday weekends require three nights.

Halloween falls on a Saturday in 2026. Downtown trick-or-treating was deliberately moved to Friday, October 30, because of that, so families do the Square on Friday. On Saturday, October 31, Willow Lake hosts a free Halloween costume show with The StratoCrackers from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Boo Hole Halloween, the big free community event at Blue Hole, runs the week before on October 24.

Yes, and it’s arguably the best month of the year here. The Wimberley Valley has been an International Dark Sky Community since 2018 and was named DarkSky Place of the Year in 2023. October 2026 brings Saturn at opposition on the 4th, the Draconids on the 8th to 9th, a new moon on the 10th, and the Orionids on the 21st to 22nd. The strongest window is October 8 to 15, which delivers over nine hours of moon-free darkness nightly.
8. Can I see monarch butterflies in Wimberley in October?
Often, though not guaranteed. Wimberley sits inside the central flyway that Texas Parks and Wildlife describes as a 300-mile corridor from Wichita Falls to Eagle Pass. Monarchs enter it in the final days of September, and peak sightings usually fall in early to mid-October on warm, sunny days. Recent seasons have run below normal because of heat and drought, so treat it as a bonus. The butterfly garden at Patsy Glenn Refuge is the most reliable spot in town.
9. Are the art galleries and Second Saturday Gallery Trail running in October?
The galleries are open daily. The monthly Second Saturday Gallery Trail has been restructured into the quarterly Wimberley Art Crawl, which runs on first Fridays with 2026 dates of March 6, June 5, September 4 and December 4, so there is no Art Crawl in October. Art on 12 does continue its own Second Saturday evening with live music and refreshments from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., falling on October 10 this year. The bigger art event this month is the Wimberley Arts Fest on October 17 to 18.
10. Do I need a car to get around Wimberley in October?
Yes, effectively. There is no public transport network here. Wimberley Square itself is walkable, and you can cover the galleries, shops and several restaurants on foot. But Blue Hole, Old Baldy, Jacob’s Well, the wineries in Driftwood and the Devil’s Backbone drive all need a vehicle. Most of the interesting distances are five to twenty minutes, so it’s easy driving, just not optional.
