Nothing says summertime like a fresh, sweet, juicy Hill Country peach. 🍑
Every summer, from June to August you can stop along RR 12 in Wimberley at a roadside stand and “pick you up” a brown paper sack filled with the delicious orangy-pink fuzzy fruit for about $10.
Most of the peaches around here come from Fredericksburg Texas. The particular stand I stopped at told me that these peaches were from Marbergers Orchards in Fred.
The sweet earthy hippie chick selling me my peaches was super friendly and I actually bought two bags from her because I admired her gusto after sitting in the ( literally ) 103° summer heat!
We love to eat them whole, straight out of the bag! I advise slicing them first because they are so juicy they’ll make a big mess, but, if you can’t wait to bit into one, be sure and have a napkin ready.
So what else can you do with those delicious peaches you just bought?
How about adding them to the charcuterie board we leave for your snacking pleasure? Sliced peaches go great with the meats, cheeses, and crackers we provide.
Another idea? Grill them! Grilled peaches are absolutely fantastic and the perfect addition to any meal as an appetizer, salad ingredient, or dessert.
A quick and easy idea is to grill your peaches and sprinkle them with cinnamon sugar.
Grilled Peaches
- Preheat the grill to medium heat.
- Mix together brown sugar and cinnamon.
- Cut peaches in half, and remove the pit.
- Brush the cut side of the peaches with butter. Grill cut side down for 3 minutes.
- Flip the peaches over and sprinkle with cinnamon and brown sugar.
- Continue grilling the peaches until the sugar starts to caramelize.
- Add ice cream and a little caramel sauce and spoon-feed to each other for a little romance!
Another idea is to add grilled peaches to the top of a wheel of brie. I found this recipe for Grilled Brie With Bourbon Peach Compote – it sounds delicious!
You can also enjoy a refreshing summer drink with your peaches.
Peach lemonade anyone? It’s super simple and it’s great garnished with peach and mint on the side of the glass… or you can add whatever alcoholic beverage of your choice. Bourbon or vodka go nicely. I chose to go with a recipe that has the least amount of work, so all you’ll need is a blender.
Peach Lemonade
- 4 peaches peeled and sliced
- One 12-ounce can of frozen lemonade concentrate
- Fill the lemonade can with water 3 times
- Put all ingredients in a blender and blend well
- Add a sprig of mint to make it look extra pretty.
- To make it an adult beverage add a couple of ounces of vodka, light rum, or bourbon.
There are so many things you can do with peaches – peach cobblers, peach pie, peach smoothies, peaches and cream, and even homemade peach ice cream.
The Texas Hill Country is known for its amazing peaches and we are lucky to be able to find fresh, juicy, and ripe peaches all summer in Wimberley.
