Wimberley has been known throughout Texas for decades as a family vacation spot. With cabins or vacation homes on the Blanco River or Cypress Creek and all there is to do here such as jumping into one of our famous Texas Swimming Holes, Blue Hole or Jacob’s Well. Families will also enjoy the rodeos, Fourth of July Parades, Wimberley Zipline, the Wimberley Boot Tour and family friendly restaurants like Community Pizza or Hays City Store.
But, one thing Wimberley is not as well known for is a romantic destination.
All that is changing however, as more private cabins, cottages, yurts and tents open up to couples only. Now, you can visit Wimberley any time of year and enjoy private spaces with amenities perfect for a getaway with the one you want to cuddle up with the most!
If you are planning a romantic getaway and are thinking about the Hill Country, check out this list of things to do in Wimberley. And don’t forget to book one of our glamping tents if you do.
Guys – there are some pretty cool spots on this list – including a few spots where popping a ring out would be a total hit!
Visit Downtown Wimberley
One of the things Wimberley is most famous for is it’s amazing shops, galleries and restaurants in our cute little downtown area.
Get there early and start your day at SIP! one of our local coffee shops and grab a seasonal latte and homemade muffin or breakfast taco. If you want a full breakfast, The Wimberley Cafe next door has an amazing breakfast that will fill you up for a day’s adventures.
Browse the shops along the square for everything from Kitchen supplies and furniture to popcorn and wine! Downtown you can also find several art galleries with paintings, sculptures, and photography from local and regional artists. One of my favorites, The Wildflower Gallery has a beautiful display of Texas Wildflower paintings and other gifts made from the prints.
You will also see many of the boots that make up the “Bootiful Wimberley” art tour. Locals and visitors alike enjoy taking selfies with the boots. Be sure and post yours on our Facebook or Tag us on Instagram!
During the fall and winter, Wimberley is decorated for the holidays with scarecrows, Christmas lights and other festive decorations.
Watch a Glass-Blowing Demonstration at Wimberley Glassworks
Wimberley Glassworks is one of my favorite places in Wimberley to take new visitors.
Here you can watch a live demonstration of how the glass blowing artists make their beautiful glass vases, light fixtures, glassware and art. Tim, the owner and lead designer and glass blower creates a beautiful piece of glass right in front of you while explaining how to achieve all the shapes and color techniques of his art.
Because the glass blowing demonstration is held in a warm (from the fire they use to blow glass) and cozy room, it is a perfect spot to get out of the cold.
Be sure and check their website for dates and times for demonstration.
Have lunch at The Leaning Pear
There’s several great restaurants in town with an amazing selection, but if you are looking for an amazing lunch in a more elegant spot, I highly recommend The Leaning Pear.
The fresh-ingredient menu from owner and chef Matthew Buchanan gives you plenty of choices for a cozy and eclectic hill country lunch or dinner.
For traditionalists, try the amazing Macaroni and Cheese!! Other top choices are the wood-fired pizzas – like the sausage and mushroom made with homemade Italian sausage and fontina cheese. Cozy soups are made daily and they have a great selection of craft beers and hill country wines.
Get there early or make a reservation for a spot by the large brick fireplace in the back! Perfect for a chilly day.
Go For A Scenic Drive
The hill country is gorgeous no matter what time of year you visit! In the spring, you’ll enjoy bluebonnets and other Texas wildflowers. In the fall and winter, you’ll see amazing sunsets.
A few favorite local drives include:
FM 32 from Wimberley to Blanco. It’s known as the Devil’s Backbone and views of the Blanco River Valley can be seen around every turn.
Hwy 32 to Purgatory Road Around Canyon Lake is another beautiful drive. Head south around the lake to see lots of peek-a-boo views of the blue water, tour the Damn, Dam (as it is known) or turn onto River Road and follow the Guadalupe River from Canyon Lake all the way to Gruene and New Braunfels. (not in summer as this road will be packed!)
RR 2325 from Wimberley to Blanco, then to Luckenbach. If you haven’t been to Luckenbach, it’s a must-do, and the drive is one of the best. You’ll cross the Blanco River, and enjoy lots of wooded views. You’ll see lots of deer on your trip so be careful.
Take A Nature Hike At Blue Hole Regional Park
Nothing warms up the body better than exercise and the trails at Blue Hole are challenging enough to keep you cozy.
With about six total miles of trails, you will climb up rocky hills, hop over trickling creeks, and experience one of the most beautiful spots in the Hill Country.
If you are adventurous, grab a blanket and a bottle of wine and hike over to the Blue Hole Overlook Trail to a rock patio that overlooks the creek. Watch the birds and deer and listen to the sounds of nature. Depending on the season, you may not see a soul for hours.
Enjoy Hill Country Wineries, Breweries, Distilleries, Or Bars
There are so many to choose from and you will definitely have a full day of fun if you visit a few of these places. Local favorites include the Hill Country Wine Shoppe, Cypress Creek Reserve Rum, Triple X Brewing, Middleton Brewery, Wimberley Valley Winery, Driftwood Estates Winery, and Duchman Winery.
Local Bars/ Restaurants in the area include Savage’s Hill Country Bar, Hays City Store, Chills on the Creek, and many more. For live music and late nights try Savage’s, Mercer Street Dance Hall or The Devil’s Backbone Tavern.
There are a couple of different services around town that will take you on a tour of these local spots, check out the Wimberley Texas Tourism Group on Facebook for help.
Watch an Indoor Play at the Wimberley Play House
For theater lovers, the Wimberley Community Theater “The Wimberley Players” is regionally recognized as one of the best. The playhouse usually has shows every evening and a Sunday matinee during each of its mini-seasons and has plays throughout the year. Lots of little towns have community theaters, but not many of them have productions honored by BroadwayWorld Austin. Tickets often sell out, so this is definitely an evening out you should plan in advance but if you like theater it really can’t be beaten.
Enjoy A Romantic Dinner At A Beautiful Italian Restaurant & Winery
One of the most romantic spots in the area is Trattoria Lisina in Driftwood, about 10 miles from Wimberley. This Tuscan Style Italian Restaurant is known as one of the top romantic dining spots in the Austin area.
Trattoria Lisina is set on a large winery estate and has fresh pasta, veal, and lamb dishes, amazing desserts, and a wonderful selection of regional and Italian wines. If you are headed here on a weekend, be sure and get a reservation. Get more details including links to their full menu here.
Spend a Few Nights In A Glamping Tent
There are lots of adorable little cabins and cottages around town but we would love you to stay in one of our romantic glamping tents at Spoon Mountain!
Imagine how romantic it would be to sip some Hill Country Wine while watching the sunset over the Wimberley Valley. Grill steaks for dinner, relax in a hammock in the breeze, enjoy the hot tub or join other glampers by the fire pit for s’mores and stories.
